Unauthorised Housing SolutionA solution to prevent further illegal slums is to clear them and construct apartment buildings arranged by the government. This way slum dwellers will have better facilities and still living in the same destination they were before.
In Thailand, the authorities organised a program called Baan Mankong to improve slums. The program gives citizens infrastructure improvement and loans to upgrade their homes. If Delhi organised a program to upgrade citizen’s houses this could reduce the slum rate. |
Waste Disposal SolutionWaste Disposing is a serious struggle as there is not much you can do with fields of rubbish. Recycling solid waste and converting much of the useless dump into needed products is the only ideal solution. Recycling helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A lot of the products energy is lost when dumped in fields so recycling these materials help us recover this energy. When we recycle organic waste it helps prevent impact on our climate such as methane gas that is released into the atmosphere. People can use solid waste to create home and office products. Delhi cannot afford to pile any more rubbish onto fields but to create a garbage management policy where waste turns into useable products is a suitable solution. So recycling gives both the people and environment a favour.
Rag picking is the job for more than 100,000 citizens of Delhi. Usually the types of people who end up with these horrible jobs are mounted in poverty, illiterate or poor rural immigrants. Some children have to take these jobs as young as five to eight years of age. Many of these children are uneducated or need the extra income for their family. These people can gather chemical poisons or infections, which can lead to brain damage, anaemia, tuberculosis or cancer. The children work extremely long hours with twelve hours being their minimum and low wages. They are also vulnerable to child abuse and exploitation. |

Over Crowded Public Transport SolutionOnly now, Delhi’s government have registered the problem of over crowded public transport. A solution of using metro rail systems has been set up and does transport an approved amount of people but still is not finishing the job. To try and build up adequate transportation, individual vehicles should be less common and more people catching public transport. This will improve the roads inconvenient traffic jams. Although for this to occur public transport has to be made more efficient, attractive, punctual and sufficient to the passengers. Severe restrictions on vehicle ownership should be applied as done in Singapore with only 15% of their population, owning a vehicle. Only a small percentage of Singapore owns a car because the authorities put the car prices up causing less people to be able to afford them and leaving them with no choice but to catch public transport or being healthy and riding a bike or walking to their destination. If this is applied to Delhi, there will be less traffic on the road and car congestion will not be a significant problem.
